Reclaiming ‘choice’ in 2021…

Jan 20, 2021 | Mental Health, Talking Anxiety

Hey everyone!

Firstly, a belated but BIG Happy New Year to you – I hope that you enjoyed a happy and peaceful Christmas Holidays, despite the obvious ‘interesting times’ we continue to live through.

I’ve often spoken about when we struggle with our Mental Health, with low self-esteem or low self-confidence – the first thing we can sacrifice is choice.

A common theme that I am hearing from audiences and clients – is that the feeling of a lack of choice is only being compounded by kicking off 2021 in various forms of restrictions, depending on where you are in the world.

However, we cannot control the uncontrollable – pandemics, lockdowns, world events, other people, what they say, what they do – the list goes on – and the pursuit of trying to control these things will only serve to create added anxiety and frustration.

So, what do we have choice over?

  • Our thoughts
  • Our actions
  • Letting go

That’s it!

But, even these can cause us issues as sometimes we come at things from a position of fear, or we end up ruminating on past mistakes – tainting the present, giving ourselves away to appease other people or situations and massively stunting our future growth.

Time is precious, why waste it?

I happened across a fantastic movie recently – Hillbilly Elegy by Ron Howard – a story about JD Vance and his journey from poverty growing up in self-described ‘Hillbilly Country’.

This didn’t just appeal to me because I love all things Country Music (!) – I promise!

There was one line that really jumped out at me and inspired me to write this post today;

“Where we come from is who we are, but we choose every day who we become.”

Wow.

So, regardless of what has gone before, whatever has happened, your mistakes, your perceived failures, wherever you are starting from – it doesn’t have to define you negatively for the rest of your life.

It can forge something better, something beautiful, something powerful – if we just point it in the right direction, to use it as a catalyst for positive change.

It takes the same energy to destroy us as it does to move us forward.

It turns out that the Groundhog Day we have all been experiencing could be the biggest tool in our armoury if pointed the right way.

Invest time in your health, wellbeing, happiness – set yourself up for a High Performing Day (HPD), a tool that I use with clients to maximise every single day – even if you are stuck in the same four walls!

Reclaim your choice today and go into 2021 with positive intent – focussing on what you can control and letting go of everything you cannot.

Well, it is time for a new beginning, eh?

Til next time!

Cheers
